CURRICULUM

 

Students participate in a rigorous academic curriculum which includes:

MATH

The curriculum is aligned with national common core standards.  Class instruction is inquiry based with a focus on a conceptual understanding of topics in arithmetic, algebra and geometry.  Students are required to justify their thinking and share mathematical ideas with classmates in small groups.

    • 5th and 6th grade courses will focus on mastery of arithmetic and number sense.
    • During 7th and 8th grade students will progress through a course in pre-algebra and algebra.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Reading and writing workshops which incorporate editing to publishing, topics from current history and art subjects and public speaking.

SCIENCE

The curriculum is designed to expose students to various topics in the natural sciences with the intent that all students will be prepared for a standard high school science curriculum.

    • During 5th and 6th grade students will take biology and earth science.
    • During 7th and 8th grade students will take chemistry and physics.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Focus on Western and Eastern History, World Cultures and Geography.

MUSIC

Introduction to an instrument, music appreciation and exposure to the music of the world.

ART

Art appreciation and application with a focus on multicultural art.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Prayer and social justice used for both personal expression and further spiritual reflection in the Episcopal tradition of inclusion.
