The Episcopal School in North Philadelphia

For years, Father Sean Mullen (Rector of Saint Mark’s Church and Co-Founder of St. James School) has been reading the works of George Saunders.

In recent years, he began a dialogue with George and the two have been speaking about the possibility of a visit and reading at St. James School. Father Mullen encouraged Saunders to bring his first children’s book, The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip.

Saunders agreed to couple his visit with a reading at the Free Library of Philadelphia. And while his trip to St. James was during Spring Break, it didn’t stop a packed classroom of students, family and friends to hear Saunders speak. Saunders read aloud from his book and began and unexpectedly engaging conversation with the students. The event was well received by all.
