The Episcopal School in North Philadelphia

On Saturday, March 5th, 26 students and five college staff arrived from Pittsburgh’s La Roche College. St. James School was the beneficiary of the college’s Alternative Spring Break Program. Since 1997, La Roche College as hosted an alternative spring break service experience for students who are interested in helping others while enjoying their spring break. For six days, students and staff camped out in the school and provided many hours of service to the school. Students painted the gym, transformed the back yard, painted desks, cleaned windows, organized classrooms, removed 4,250 lbs of invasive brush from the property, planted grass and also tutored students in our after school program. The week included other opportunities including a post-graduate volunteer panel discussion, a presentation on the achievement gap in Philadelphia, prayer experiences and a trip to the infamous Pat’s King of Steaks in South Philadelphia. La Roche College certainly left their mark on our campus and on our hearts. We are grateful for this new college partnership with our friends in Pittsburgh.
