Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice

As an Episcopal organization, St. James grounds its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in the words of the Baptismal Covenant, and our promise to “seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself,” and, “to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.” That pledge to respect the dignity of every human being includes how we differ from one another, as well as how we share a common humanity and reflect the image of God. It serves as a guide to our daily need to act with compassion, love and integrity, as well as to name and challenge behaviors that promote exclusion, intolerance, and mistrust.

Diversity

DEIJ emphasizes the value of diversity in all its forms, including race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and more. By embracing diversity, St. James acknowledges and celebrates the unique backgrounds and perspectives of its students, families, staff, and community members. This commitment to diversity aligns with the vision of creating a world without inequities, as it recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of their differences.

Rev. 7:9-10

Equity

Equity is central to both DEIJ and the mission of St. James. Equity entails ensuring that everyone has access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. St. James’ mission of promoting a world without inequities underscores the importance of addressing systemic barriers and disparities that perpetuate inequality. By prioritizing equity, St. James works to level the playing field and create a more just and inclusive society.

Psalm 33:5

Inclusion

Inclusion is about creating environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. St. James embraces the principle of inclusion by fostering a sense of belonging and community among its students and stakeholders. By actively seeking out and amplifying diverse voices and perspectives, St. James ensures that all members of its community have a seat at the table and are empowered to contribute to the school’s mission and vision.

Romans 15:7

Justice

Justice is about addressing systemic injustices and advocating for fairness and equality for all. St. James’ mission of working towards a world without inequities aligns closely with the pursuit of justice. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, St. James seeks to dismantle barriers to opportunity and create a more just and equitable society where everyone can thrive.

Proverbs 31:8-9

Our Commitments

St. James understands that issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
extend beyond race alone.

St. James recognizes that resistance to discrimination requires simultaneous resistance to all forms of social inequality and oppression, including those based on gender, neurodiversity, and other identities.

St. James is committed to diversity and inclusion efforts to challenge and dismantle systemic barriers that may disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

St. James is dedicated to creating policies and practices that promote gender and racial equity in all facets of our community, from curriculum development to hiring processes.

St. James believes  it is imperative to equip all minds with a comprehensive understanding of racism—its origins, manifestations, and societal implications. We are committed to providing inclusive and unbiased education that addresses white privilege and its persistence, empowering all students to critically engage with complex issues and work towards meaningful solutions.

St. James partners with students, families, and communities of color, acknowledging and addressing the destructive and enduring impact of racism.

St. James seeks to maintain accountability in our antiracism efforts, particularly to those who share our commitment to dismantling racial injustice.

St. James is committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging in partnership with all members of our community.
