Career Day 2018 brought an impressive roster of professionals of color to our campus for presentations and lively Q&A sessions with students. The volunteers who came to share their personal career stories made an important contribution to our celebration of Black History Month: allowing our students to see themselves reflected in black professionals who had career goals and persevered on the path to those goals.
Highlights:
Marcus Allen, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Independence Region stressed the importance of developing strong relationships with teachers and getting involved in enrichment activities as a vital component of becoming a future leader; welcoming invitations and opportunities to be put in positions of leadership.
Dr. Crystal Lauderdale, Veterinarian Physician, Mt. Airy Animal Hospital, spoke to students about the importance of good grades, and getting advanced training or education in today’s competitive world.
Ashley Brewer, Income Maintenance Caseworker, PA Department of Human Services, communicated that sometimes plan A doesn’t work out due to unforeseen obstacles and that it’s important to be adaptable to trying something different even if it’s midway in the journey to completing personal and/or professional goals.
