School Culture
Strong Culture Supports Loving Relationships
School culture is driven by the values, traditions, and rules that support day-to-day interactions among students, teachers, and staff. At St. James School, we are intentional about sustaining a positive culture of love in which everyone engages, collaborates, and thrives. As the adults, our goals are teaching, practicing, modeling, and reinforcing behaviors that will set students up for successful relationships.
Houses are Homes for Relationships
Loving relationships are the core of our school culture. That manifests daily in the belonging and camaraderie felt within the four Houses of St. James: Benevolentia, Humilitas, Industria, and Patientia. A cherished tradition – the sorting of students from all grades and staff from all departments into a House – gives each person a home in which strong bonds are forged.
House members gather daily at noon for prayer and lunch. House meetings each Friday are a time for togetherness through games and shared activities. House pride peaks twice a year when we hold House Cup competitions. The coveted trophy goes to the House that demonstrates honorable sportspersonship and intellectual and athletic prowess.
Forming Students to Lead with Love and Responsibility
At St. James, we believe students are called to lead with love: in school, in their families, and in the wider world. Before leading others, students learn to lead themselves through self-awareness, responsibility, and care. These skills form the foundation for strong relationships and human flourishing.
Through the St. James 3Rs, we teach students how to build, repair, and strengthen relationships in community.
The St. James 3Rs
Relationships: “Help us to love our neighbors.”
Students learn to live well with others by embracing differences, showing respect, and building healthy relationships with family, friends, classmates, and teachers.
Reconciliation: “Help us to own our mistakes.”
When harm occurs, students are invited to take responsibility, seek forgiveness, and learn from their actions rather than avoid or deny them.
Restorative Action: “Help us to heal relationships and community.”
Students work to repair harm, restore trust, and contribute to a safe, respectful community where everyone can belong and learn.
Ready, Set: Expectations That Help Students Grow
At St. James, we believe every student can rise to clear, age-appropriate expectations when they are consistently taught, supported, and rooted in care. Our approach focuses on helping students grow in responsibility, engagement, character, and their ability to live well in community.
We use two guiding frameworks that shape daily engagement and life at school:
REACH (Grades 4–5): Responsible, Enthusiastic, Attentive, Curious, Hardworking
AGAPE (Grades 6–8): Adaptable, Gratitude, Awareness, Patience, Excellence
These expectations are introduced, practiced, and reinforced through daily engagement in classrooms, relationships, and school life. They are also outlined in our Family Handbook and supported by shared agreements around learning, behavior, and technology use.
Encouragement, Accountability, and Restoration
At St. James, we believe students grow best in a culture that balances encouragement, clear expectations, and meaningful engagement with accountability. We intentionally use positive reinforcement to recognize and celebrate students who demonstrate strong character and make positive choices.
When mistakes happen, we respond through restorative practices that focus on reflection, responsibility, and repair. Rather than centering punishment, we focus on understanding harm, rebuilding trust, and strengthening relationships and engagement within our community.
Students, families, and staff work together in this process so that every situation becomes an opportunity for learning, growth, and deeper engagement. Our goal is not only to address behavior, but to form young people who can reflect, repair, and contribute positively to their community.
Students are invited into a shared commitment to lead with compassion, take responsibility for their actions, and use their gifts to contribute to the well-being and engagement of others. These expectations help form not only strong students, but young people prepared to thrive in high school and beyond.
