All Are Welcome to Join Us for Worship and Fellowship
The Church of St. James the Less invites everyone into community, fellowship, and worship by offering Mass, sacraments, music, pastoral care, a weekly communal dinner, and monthly family-friendly events. Wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome in our beautiful Episcopal church, a National Historic Landmark.
Celebrate Mass with Us
All are welcome to join us in worship. We celebrate Mass, also known as Holy Communion or Holy Eucharist, twice each week in the Church of St. James the Less. Fridays at 11:00 am (or the last day of the school week) with St. James students and staff, and Sundays at 5:00 pm, when we invite the entire community to worship together and stay for a buffet dinner and fellowship. Additional services are scheduled on holy days and during the Christmas and Easter seasons.
History of Our Church
The Church of St. James the Less was founded by prominent Philadelphians and has been serving the surrounding area since 1846. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. Walkways traverse our shady green churchyard, which is always open to those seeking a peaceful place for quiet reflection. Learn more about our history, building, and grounds.
Who Was St. James the Less?
St. James the Less was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. A son of Alphaeus, he is called “the Less” to distinguish him from James the Greater, son of Zebedee, likely because he was younger or shorter in stature. St. James the Less was the first Bishop of Jerusalem, known for his holiness, and called “the Just.” He died around 62 A.D.
