The 5th grade class performed an experiment to determine if the size of the hole at the end of a balloon would effect the distance the balloon would travel. Students inflated balloons. Students then attached index cards with different sized holes on the end of the balloon. The balloon was then taped to a straw that was fed through a sting. The students let the balloons fly and measured the distance.

Students were challenged to find the answers:

1. Does the shape of the balloon affect how far (or fast) the rocket travels?

2. Does the length of the straw affect how far (or fast) the rocket travels?

3. Does the type of string affect how far (or fast) the rocket travels? (try fishing line, nylon string, cotton string, etc.)

4. Does the angle of the string affect how far (or fast) the rocket travels?
