The Episcopal School in North Philadelphia

On Monday, January 17, St. James School welcomed over 75 volunteers for our first annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day. Volunteers were comprised of parishioners from St. Asaph’s Church in Bala CynwydPenn Charter Middle School students and other friends of St. James School.

Projects included:

  • painting the kitchen, lobby and art room
  • disassembling 62 desks in preparation for painting
  • organizing a mailing
  • cleaning the music room
  • organizing documents
  • repairing broken shelves

Penn Charter students enjoyed a morning presentation about the school and a discussion about the educational concerns of the local neighborhood. St. Asaph’s Church had the opportunity to hear an afternoon presentation about the school during lunch. Guests were excited about the movement currently taking place within the Episcopal church to address the achievement gap, which is considered by many as the civil rights issue of our time.

The day was marked with a remembrance of the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
